Three years have passed since the COVID-19 pandemic posed a tremendous global challenge to society and medicine. Knowing its origin and if it can happen again is paramount.

Significant challenges arose when humanity experienced a devastating new viral infection like SARS-CoV-2.

How should individuals and societies respond to a new situation like this?

I will examine the diverse hypotheses regarding the origin of SARS-CoV-2 and explore their implications for our understanding of the pandemic. I will also discuss current evidence and its implications for future research.

Four hypotheses of how the pandemic originated:

One of the biggest unknowns refers to the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 29 virus, how the infection began, and how it was transmitted efficiently between humans to result in such a powerful pandemic.

The question seems easy to answer. However, the origin of SARS-CoV-2 has been the subject of substantial debate mainly because there needs to be accessible to relevant data.
